The Biomedical Engineering course offered in Hindi at Shri Govindram Seksaria Institute of Technology and Science (SGSITS) has been discontinued for the 2023 batch, marking the second consecutive year of the program being inactive. All nine students from the 2023 batch have switched to the English-medium program. This change occurred during the internal branch sliding option available to second-year students as part of the college-level counseling for engineering admissions based on merit. Concerns have been raised about the future prospects of the Hindi-medium program as the first batch in 2022 also faced a similar fate when students opted out of the course. Introduced in 2022 with the approval of the All India Council for Technical Education, the Hindi-language Biomedical Engineering course at SGSITS has struggled to attract students from the beginning. In 2023, ten students initially enrolled, but one withdrew early on, leaving the remaining nine students, who have now shifted to the English-medium course. Following this shift, there are no students remaining in the Hindi-medium program for two consecutive years. Dr. Prashant Bansod, head of the biomedical engineering department, confirmed that all students from the 2023 batch have transitioned to the English program, despite course materials being prepared in Hindi for the second year. SGSITS is currently the only institution in the country offering a Biomedical Engineering course in Hindi, as part of an initiative aimed at promoting technical education in regional languages, though it has struggled to gain traction in Madhya Pradesh. College authorities have expressed concerns over waning interest, despite efforts to provide textbooks in Hindi, translate course content, and offer flexibility for exams to be written in a mix of Hindi and English.Scratching heads or straying from the path could be a result of external pressures, such as peer influence or parental expectations favoring English studies. Despite facing a lack of books in Hindi for Biomedical Engineering, the college faculty took it upon themselves to translate the course material and create study resources for students pursuing the BTech program in Biomedical Engineering in Hindi. Despite early challenges, the college is dedicated to supporting and empowering the 12 new students in this branch for the current academic year. The course was specifically tailored for students coming from Hindi medium backgrounds or rural areas, with a focus on dispelling the misconception that studying in Hindi hinders job placement opportunities. The new batch is being encouraged and reassured about their future employability prospects, as stated by SGSITS director Dr. Vijay Rode in an interview with TOI.
